” Design an inter- disciplinary space ‘within a space’ to reflect the identity and culture of DJCAD Art School. The design must encourage border crossings between disciplines to meet and share ideas yet challenge the existing brutalist concrete aesthetic”

BORDER CROSSINGS: MICRO; MESO; MACRO

| MOTION EMOTION |

MOTION // EMOTION is a spatial concept which conveys the importance of movement and interaction within an art school setting. The existing site (DJCAD, Matthew Building, level 5) is a brutalist, concrete structure with dominating horizontal lines running through the space. When examining the use of the space it became evident that people simply used the space as a corridor to walk through which defeats its proposed purpose. Within an Art School, inter- disciplinary interaction and socialising is key in maintaining that tight community feeling which they are known to provide. Therefore, my design [MOTION // EMOTION] argues this point by introducing amphitheatre style seating which runs by the window, lit up orange diagonal floor panels and 2 geometric suspended installations. These installations are powered by an electric motor to move gradually creating shadows and form, providing a literal sense of motion. Amphitheatre seating within a social context, similar to the Spanish Steps in Rome, is simply meant for seating but works as a meeting place for conversations, debates, performers, readers or even as a place to lookout and examine the view. By incorporating this concept within an art school, I hope it will encourage and increase its inhabitants motive to move around the space and inspire inter- disciplinary socialisation.
