PARK(ING) DAY 2017:
OUR TERRITORY/ YOUR TERRITORY
Being human, we often forget that we are still animals, animals who hunt, animals who love and animals who are territorial. Every person dominates their own territory, whatever it may be, we all have our unique way of expressing a space as our own. Our Territory/ Your Territory is a temporary public art installation, held on Cuba Street, Wellington as part of PARK(ing) Day. Parking day is an annual global event, where artists, activists and designers come together and transform car parking spaces into temporary public places. Working on the theme of territories, we created a concept where our stand-alone structure would initially act as our personal territory marked with black string. Over the course of the day, the installation would be continually developed through public interaction. We invited the public to take part by asking them to build upon our territory by adding a string in a colour which best represents them, thus marking their territory. By the end of the day our installation had developed from a simplistic, minimalist structure to a vibrant body of colour filled with soul, expressing the dynamic culture of Cuba Street.

Our secondary research primarily focused on existing installations/ pavilions and public art interventions which use string like material as the focal point in the design. We decided on using string as it is a material which can be easily manipulated, giving the user much greater flexibility in the way they decide mark their territory.

Primary Research: Site Analysis. What surrounds the space? Which colours are evident and pop? What materials are present? Could any businesses inspire our design? What risk factors may we encounter?
