Haven is an interactive installation which invites the public to experience a moment of thanks. Although the 2011 Christchurch earthquake brought many devastating circumstances to families across the city, one positive element which has emerged over time is a feeling of community. During the quake and its aftermath, families, neighbours, even strangers, have supported each other and given a kind hand to those who need it most. Through charity appeals, volunteer work or simply through the generosity of their hearts, Christchurch became a city of giving thus inspiring me to design and develop a public art statement which addresses this notion. This freestanding structure is composed of 10 wire-frame ‘house’ shaped elements centred around a private interactive ‘house’ shaped pod. In this pod, the user has 2 options: to record a statement of themselves either giving thanks to anyone who has helped them during or since the crisis or to state a moment they feel proud to say they helped somebody in need; or to listen to stranger’s heartfelt stories of how people helped change lives for the better over time. I have purposefully designed this element small enough to only comfortably fit one person. This allows the user to experience a complete moment of sound privacy.
