| URBAN THRESHOLD |
"Design a new purpose for an existing doorway area in a local site that reflects critical understanding of the architectural term threshold. Consider an existing building or place which has an underused, unimpressive or forgettable doorway, entrance/exit zone and design a memorable spatial experience there."

Duality (between) Light is an urban threshold inspired by the qualities of yin and yan. The passage is purposefully designed by using the aesthetics of both light and dark atmosphere to create a balance in energy.
Alleyways are urban areas with literal dark and light connotations due to their narrow passage, limiting sunlight but are also spaces feared by many, known for their non-literal dark/ intimidating qualities. In Pierre von Meiss’ passage on thresholds and limitations, he speaks of the dynamics of the path and how every path provokes an experience through action. Considering this, my aim was to design an urban threshold within an alleyway which evokes positive energy, providing a natural experience.
Candle Lane, which is situated adjacent Dock Street in Dundee, is an area with a dark history. Dundee’s maritime industry brought hundreds of workers to the city every week. Unfortunately however, a bigger workforce also meant that illegal actions like prostitution were at their height in Dundee around this time. Alleyways like Candle Lane would have been the typical environment to perform such acts due to their narrow, discreet appearance. Through consideration of the user and its history, my design focuses on attempting to reverse the intimidating aspects of alleyways.
My design consists of three equal parts, two of which hold large threshold volumes. These volumes, which were inspired by Peter Zumthor’s 2011 Serpentine Pavilion, provide a simple alternative path through the space and are purposefully situated at both ends of the passageway. The black vinyl covering on the thresholds is a simple approach to darkening the light space, and subsequently the in-between space is naturally lightened.
Duality between Light uses opposing forces (dark and light atmosphere) to compliment each other. Each quality has differing elements and connotations therefore by using contrast I have created duality. My threshold provides a flowing movement, a natural experience with no conflict of energy.
